Does anyone know a good legal firm in Melbourne?

Not that I like lawyers – contrary, I see them as a necessary evil. However, I am interested to see if there is a good qualitative measure to actually see value for money from those ‘legal guys’. I would like to know if someone had experience with property lawyers, commercial lawyers and personal injury/accidents lawyers in Melbourne, Australia. Any good experiences, any bad ones?

This is the dilemma, not only to use legal firms in Melbourne, but also to use worldwide legal profession. Everybody seems to be afraid to ask lawyers for advice – they think the cost!!! There are legal firms, which do not charge for the first visit. Some take no money if they do not win. They usually post that info on the web.

My friends have used Carliese Thomas (not sure about exact name) in Melbourne for family law matters. No, the did not divorce (LOL). However, they were happy with the service. Someone told be that for very serious issues of Family Law and Personal Injury Law you can use Richmond and Bennison Lawers (http://www.richbenn.com.au). They are in Melbourne and Mordialloc (Baysite Area). I did not have experience with them though.

    Emma,
I do not know much about other Melbourne lawyers but I dealt with Richmond & Bennison once. It was a family matter, pretty convoluted and was about to become ugly (parties were ready to bleed in the court).
Warwick Barton from R&B) settled the matter to the satisfaction of all 3 parties. He is a very tactful person with lots of experience. I can trust him.

I am a Melbourne Lawyer and I am surprised that subject of lawyers (especially Melbourne Layers) can be used in blogs :-). I am not going to advertise any legal firm in Melbourne or Victoria :-). However, I think to generalise, which legal firm is good and which is bad is like comparing fruits with vegetables only (rather then bananas with bananas and oranges with oranges – you know what I mean). My brother works for a developer – his company has vast cash reserves to employ the best property and commercial lawyers in Melbourne. They are using Property and Business Lawyers P&B. However, this is not a service for two neighbours having a dispute over a meter of land. For those disputes you should use VCAT. I have heard about Richmond and Bennison. In this case I would recommend only Family Law (Divorce, Seperation, Child Support). They also have an excellent Personal Injury Law legal team (asbestos claims, workplace injury, medical malpractice). As for property law and commercial law – I am not sure how good these guys are.
